In and Around Hughenden
Hughenden is located in northwest Queensland and is a significant destination on Australia’s dinosaur trail. There are numerous attractions close by including Porcupine Gorge, The Basalt Byways Tourist Drive, Mount Walker, the Flinders Discovery Centre, Eco trail along Flinders River and numerous national parks. Not only are there a multitude of activities in and around Hughenden to keep you busy whilst you are here, but we also serve as an excellent half way point towards other attractions and towns further west to break the drive and rest those weary heads.
Flinders Discovery Centre
The Flinders Discovery Centre is your on stop spot for all things Hughenden. The lovely ladies at the centre will provide you with all the information, maps and suggested itineraries needed to make your stay in Hughenden a spectacular one. The Discovery Centre also holds a life size replica of a dinosaur and a large collection of fossils from Hughenden’s prehistoric times.
Porcupine Gorge Lookout
The Porcupine Gorge lookout is approximately 60km north of Hughenden on the partially sealed Kennedy Development Road. It is worth checking with the Discovery Centre on the condition of this road before heading to Porcupine Gorge. A further 11km along the Kennedy Development Road you will find the Pyramid Campground. It is here that you will also find a walking track that will take you deep into The Gorge where you will see the tall sandstone cliffs and permanent waterholes.
Mount Walker
Mount Walker is located 11km south of Hughenden along the Muttaburra Road. This road to the lookout is fully sealed and will take you to the top of Mount Walker where you can find seating and picnic table as well as an excellent view of Hughenden and its vast plains. Mount Walker is popular for afternoon walks up the hill and is a perfect place to see one of our magnificent sunsets.
